But there is more to the second question! The storage place was originally a furniture company. The owners lived in Eliot and their children attended school here. They owned most of the block I think. Immediately adjacent to the store on Knott was a two-story building that was originally a stage coach roadhouse and bakery. Until Nike acquired the site, the original stables and a very large brick oven (garage sized!), were still behind the building, although seriously decrept. The road house had been converted to SRO-type apartments mostly rented by people who were down but not yet out, if you know what I mean. It was going to be demolished to make way for Nike, but yours truely relocated it one block south to 544 NE Russell. It is listed on the Historic Register due to it being one (if not the only one) of a type of building that was common along MLK at the turn of the 20th Century (it was built in 1912). It now houses 5 apartments and the former bakery storefront is still evident.

Greetings,

In anticipation of retirement I am considering relocation to Portland and would appreciate information about areas that might meet my requirements. Interested in studios or one-bedroom apartments in the range of $650-800/mo. in areas that are safe, quiet, clean, and centrally located (i.e., within easy access to shopping and other frequently used amenities/services, by foot and/or reliable mass transit). Prefer older (vintage?) well-maintained buildings, not high-rises. Kindly advise if this is feasible within your jurisdiction and how I might locate reputable rental management companies. Thank you for the time and consideration.

Good Day; There's a petty mini-crime spree taking place that leads me to suspect that the Oregonian's delivery person(s)-[Distrct #26] is responsible. It seems the thefts have occurred mainly after the xmas weekend and all the items have been stolen from the front porches i.e. a flower stand(mine) and an adirondack chair (which was being observed being stolen one night on 10th and Thompson).
So far we have yet to speak to the manager mano-mano
however the purpose of this note is to hopefully spread the word and perhaps find out if others are experiencing the same problems.

Cordially yours,
