You may have glossed over the headlines about the City Council’s infatuation with new arenas for minor sports. The deal being crafted is for public financing and subsidy to convert the current baseball stadium (PGE Park) into a soccer venue and to construct a replacement stadium in either Lents, or at the Rose Quarter.
Baseball Stadium Opposition
At the April 13th General Membership meeting the Eliot Neighborhood Association voted to oppose the current plan for development of a minor league baseball stadium in the Rose Quarter and to work on a Good Neighbor Agreement. Though the Rose Quarter is not in Eliot, it borders the neighborhood and has an impact on neighbors.
Major League Soccer Coming to Portland
Today at a press conference held at the Hilton in downtown Portland, Major League Soccer officials announced they were awarding Portland a MLS team. This announcement came a little over a week after city council voted 3 – 2 to approve soccer.
