On this Fourth of July we stopped by Tiny’s for lunch. While going inside I noticed some chalk on the sidewalk. After looking a little closer I saw chalk south down MLK as far as I could see. Just up a block or so was the end of the chalk along with several people writing on the sidewalk. We ate our lunch outside then went to talk with the chalkers.
The July 4th issue of Willamette Week has a very interesting article about changes in the Eliot and Boise neighborhoods.
The author, Nancy Rommelmann, is a relatively new Portland transplant who lives on Northeast Cook Street between Rodney and Williams. She talks about the significant demographic changes she’s seen on her block in just the few years since she bought her house. I appreciated her nuanced attitudes about change and the wide range of people she quoted.
Coincidentally, the day before Willamette Week published the article, I bicycled along that very stretch of Cook Street. I noticed two houses next door to each other, both porches full of loud, revelers. One group was African American. The other was white. I thought it was a telling snapshot of our changing neighborhood.
In Other Words Women’s Books and Resources has organized a Women’s History of Portland mural project to promote the mission of empowering women through art and education.
The public is invited to attend and comment at a review of a mural by the Public Art Advisory Committee of the Regional Arts & Culture Council.
The June 28 inPortland section of The Oregonian has an article about major development at the northern edge of Eliot.
Developer Ben Kaiser has two projects in the works: BackBridge Station, a $14 million mixed-use development with 41 units on Fremont between Vancouver and Williams; and Backbridge Lofts, a 39-unit residential project at the southeast corner of Williams and Fremont.
As I was walking to work last week I passed a guy all decked out from head to ankle in Blazers gear. I would say head to toe, but he was not wearing Blazers shoes though his black sneakers did fit right in. I remember back when it was not unusual to see folks sportin’ Blazers gear. I like that I am seeing it more and more.

For a long time my wife and I have had this idea to taste in the lower Albina area of Eliot. Being busy like everyone else, we finally, after many months, implemented the plan. Stereotypically I prefer beer and my wife prefers wine. Of course that’s not say I don’t enjoy a good wine now and then and her a good beer. On this day we were both happy.

The other day I was walking home from work. I work near the Lloyd Center Mall, so I try to get my daily exercise by walking. Anyway, as I was walking through the Nike Outlet parking lot I smelled coffee in the air. It’ wasn’t the familiar coffee smell like experienced on a Saturday morning in Goldrush Coffee Bar, it was something different.
Roy Jay, longtime community resident and businessman, will serve as Grand Marshal of the walk.
Date: Saturday, August 18 at Dawson Park.
Activities and registration: 8 a.m.
Walk: 9 a.m.
The Good in the neighbor-Hood parade and neighborhood festival will unfold the weekend of June 23-24.
The parade is Saturday, June 23. It starts at 11 a.m.
The festival is Noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Location: King School Park — 4800 Block of N.E. 6th (South of N.E. Alberta St.)
Volunteers of America (VOA) is hosting a block party in Eliot on Tuesday, August 21.
Time: 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Place: Northeast Sacramento Street between MLK and 7th.
The free event will feature food and games for kids.
VOA runs a men’s residential center on MLK.
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance is looking at Northeast Rodney Avenue as a future bike boulevard.
Such a designation could mean a variety of changes to calm traffic. Speed bumps, traffic circles and street resurfacing would be possibilities.
A bike boulevard designation could also include improvements to help bicyclists and pedestrians cross Fremont at Rodney.
Dennis Nyback owns thousands of short 16mm films. Through June 21 at the Waypost (3120 N. Williams) Dennis will put on a nightly showing of films that reflect on articles in the New York Times and The Oregonian. Nightly shows are at 8 p.m. except on Monday, when the performance will be at 1 p.m.
