Bringing the Sun to the Northwest
As a native Oregonian, every year at this time, I wonder to myself, “Can it get any worse?” But this year the weather seems particularly bad. I do need to remind myself that even while I write this article the sun is shining brightly outside. Maybe it just takes us awhile in the Northwest to regain the comfort that the sun really does come out again, after our nine month dreary winters. Let’s talk about better, brighter things though.
Let’s talk about how the Al Forthan Memorial Scholarship was able to award $35,000 in scholarship money to high school seniors throughout Oregon this year! Amazing right?! A scholarship that started six years ago with $500 to its name has now gone on to help over 80 students from Oregon pursue higher education. We at Volunteers of America Men’s Residential Center feel really privileged to be a part of this because more than anything we want to see drug/alcohol addiction prevention through education. It is with this in mind that we would like to invite you to our Bike and Hike Fundraiser at Larch Mt. on August 6th.
You can be a part of this event in three ways: Join the bike ride that starts at Lewis & Clark State Park and winds its way to the top of Larch Mt. This 45 mile ride is for the serious biker and has been named one of the top 100 climbs in the US by Bicycling magazine. I realize this is not everyone’s cup of tea so we also have a leisurely 2-4 mile hike that you can take part in or just join us for the BBQ at the top. We would love to have the opportunity to share with the neighborhood more about the scholarship and also raise money for it! And we’ve attached a warm, sunny day guarantee to the event as well. Please contact me with any questions you might have or to register for the event!
