Friends of Trees

  • Serves about ⅔ of portland (east of the river only) & surrounding areas – tries to do lower canopy areas
  • Next year – Jan 16 (MLK wknd) 
  • Curb zone tree program- not involved- 100x the cost currently. Managed by city
  • Bioswale trees – BES manages these but FOT doesn’t work w/ them any more
  • They need pickup truck drivers to volunteer more than anything else

  • FOT is interested in planting more at community sites

  • The wrought Iron fence was added to their parking area due to theft a few years ago.
  • Their property is in the CM3 zone- if they left a giant building would probably be built, making the parking situation around the building much worse
  • They are a 501(c)3 – they are short on big donors. Municipal & other funders are major sources.
  • They will have an article for us in September!

FOT Question for the community!

  • Is there anywhere in the n’hood that needs trees?  Trees for Free isn’t funded forever(!)

Braided River

  • North reach river plan was appealed in 2010 – never re-attempted to pass anything (Mayor Adams was in charge). Media drama at the time
  • Aiming for a city council “reading” in spring 2027 – required to pass at some point
  • The North reach river plan is the community vision for what the waterfront should be. 
  • Current boundary includes part of Eliot
  • What are important historical archeological or cultural sites ? 
  • Heavy industrial sites have lower requirements for trees. In this plan we could change this
  • There is a meeting from BPS in next Monday July 27 at 6:15pm:

Discussion with Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) staff on the Willamette River North Reach Project. Meeting agenda to follow.

BPS staff will present the goals and objectives of the project and gather input from participants on opportunities and constraints that staff should consider to inform the project’s public engagement and project proposals moving forward.     

Meeting will be in-person from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm at the St. Johns Community Center. We respectfully ask no more than two representatives per neighborhood association attend and we greatly appreciate your time and effort to participate in the early stages of this project.

Other topics:

  • Mike attended a pre-app hearing about an industrial site at MLK and Sacrament (west side). The city is being ‘helpful’ to applicants by coaching them on how to avoid onerous requirements.
  • There will be a Zone V Parking discussion at August meeting

Motion: 4-0 passed to send a letter opposing phase 1B funding for the Rose Quarter Project.
