Bunk Bar is the latest rendition from the Bunk family to occupy the space under the Wonder Ballroom. About a year ago a new restaurant named Trigger – billed as “a Bunk Joint” opened up. It was a sit-down restaurant featuring quality Tex-Mex. Over time they changed up the menu a bit, some for the bad, some for the good. In June the Beer Can Chicken was featured in Portland Monthly. Eventually they switched to counter ordering and no longer had wait staff. That pretty much marked the end of Trigger. Now, still a part of the family, the space has become another Bunk Bar.
Bunk Bar is a unique, original sandwich shop and bar. Like other locations, it is counter based ordering complete with an “Order Food Here” sign and a chalkboard menu. They did retain some of the Trigger favorites like Queso Deluxe – a cheesy dip with guacamole, brisket and jalapenos. You can also still order the Side Pipe – a large frozen margarita with a miniature Corona beer topsy turvy in the middle. Otherwise Bunk Bar is pure Bunk.
Though Trigger is missed, the sandwiches at Bunk Bar are really good. If you have thought to yourself that you don’t like sandwiches, do your taste buds a favor and at least try it. The Cubano featuring pork belly, swiss, pickles and mustard may sound relatively simple but it is really good! Their Chicken Salad sandwich has Dijon, bacon and avocado. It’s also hard to not want to try the Italian Cured Meats with “Bunk marinated” hot peppers and provolone picante.
The bar is full service serving up your favorite cocktails or weekly Bunk specials. On non-show nights it is easy to get a seat at the bar and order directly from the bartender. When Wonder Ballroom is having a show it is a great place to grab a bite to eat, get a drink and just hang out before the show starts.
Check out their website at http://www.bunkbar.com , however the Eliot location is mysteriously missing.
