Eliot’s Best Patios

As dry, sunny days become more frequent, Portlanders begin to think about how we can make the most of these few glorious months before the dark, damp weather turns us into recluses once again. Good news if you live in Eliot or just pass through on a regular basis. Our neighborhood has some great patios where you can bask in the sun (or hide from it in the shade while still smelling the fresh air). We asked you to name your favorite patio in the neighborhood and here are the results! We planned to publish the top three, but we had a tie for second place, so here are the four best patios in Eliot!

3rd Place: Billy Ray’s Neighborhood Dive 8%
2216 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd

Billy Rays patio

This unassuming cash-only dive bar is a local favorite and its accommodating back patio is a popular gathering place year round. The covered half is enclosed and heated during the winter months, making it a cozy refuge for smokers and during the more inclement months it shields the sun-wary. Large, sturdy round tables make it an excellent gathering place for groups.

2nd Place (tie): Waypost 16%
3120 N Williams Ave

Eliot residents enjoy the Waypost’s southwestern food and live music year-round, but its patio is a delightful escape, especially when the adjoining garden is in full bloom. Enjoy a cocktail or plate of tacos at a picnic table or wander around the Fargo Food Forest and take in the scenery. Lovely as it is now, this outdoor space used to be a paved lot. In 2009 it became the first depaving project completed by local nonprofit Depave. The fruit trees, nut trees, herbs, vegetables, and flowers are cared for by Urban Farm Collective.

2nd Place (tie): TwentySix Cafe 16%
2723 NE 7th Ave

26 Cafe patio

This elegant European-style cafe’s cozy heated and covered back patio is inviting even during the wet season, but especially nice when the warm weather hits. This peaceful space, equipped with Wi-Fi and spacious tables, is a popular spot for working and studying, or just having a meal or drinks with friends.

1st Place: McMenamin’s White Eagle Saloon 36%
836 N Russell St

Earning more than one third of the votes, White Eagle’s patio, with its inviting fire pit, lush bamboo and flowering shrubs, ample seating, and ornately painted fence posts is our winner. Awnings along the exterior wall provide shelter and hanging strings of lights add to the ambience after dark. If you’re looking for a casual, friendly spot to have a meal or enjoy a local brew while enjoying some fresh air, White Eagle’s got you covered.
