AARP NeighborWalks for North Williams: July 22

Hey neighbors! Do you know about AARP Oregon NeighborWalks?

NeighborWalks is a collaborative community walking program brought to you by AARP Oregon, City of Portland Bureau of Transportation and Oregon Walks. The vision is to get more people walking every day for health, transportation, environment, and community. Walks take place in the Portland area. Each walk is approximately two hours long and developed and led by AARP volunteer leaders with support from community partners. You can join these intergenerational walks as we celebrate a community for all ages and abilities!

Coming up in July is the North Williams District walk developed by Eliot resident and AARP Oregon Volunteer Richard Hunter. The 2-mile walk begins at 10am on Saturday, July 22. Learn about the history, preservation, and gentrified changes in this area and discover historic churches, local businesses, housing, Urban League of Portland, Dawson Park, Legacy Health, the Hill Block property, and more.

Register for the North Williams District walk and learn about other community walks at aarp.org/NeighborWalks.

Return of Friends of the Children’s Friend Raiser Event, and Stanton Street Closure May 11-12

After several years as a smaller event, Friends of the Children’s Friend Raiser is returning to its pre-pandemic format.

Billed as “Portland’s biggest one-night fundraising event” this year’s Friend Raiser will, in a return to form, feature a silent auction, live auction, special appeal, food, drinks, and inspirational stories drawn from Friends of the Children’s uniquely important work.

In support of its annual event, Friends of the Children has been issued a 24-hour permit to close NE Stanton Street adjacent to their parking lot, between Williams and Rodney. The block-long closure will begin the morning of Thursday, May 11, and Stanton will re-open the morning of May 12.

Event attendees will park in the hospital lot two blocks south of Dawson Park, at 65 NE Graham Street. Eliot residents can expect the event to commence at 6pm on May 11, and end at 10pm.

Information is available here: https://www.friendraiserpdx.com/

Friends of the Children’s non-profit mission is “Impacting generational change by empowering youth who are facing the greatest obstacles through relationships with professional mentors – 12+ years, no matter what.” It is celebrating 30 years of service in Portland, with locations across the US and in the UK.
