Concert Donations Needed!

The Eliot Neighborhood Concert Committee has been hard at work gathering sponsors and creating a fantastic lineup of music for our annual Dawson Park Concert Series and movie night. We are in need of some help however. A couple of our larger sponsors from past years are unable to give this year, so we are still in need of donations and sponsorship.

Expanding a Family… The Portland Way

Urban Chickens in front of their coop.

Over the last several years Portland has undergone a transformation of sorts with city dwellers getting creative in how they Urban Farm.  Many have created their own garden boxes to grow organic vegetables, planted fruit trees in their yards and parking strips, and added berry bushes to their landscaping, all using compost they’re making from kitchen and yard scraps.  The latest trend is keeping chickens in the city.

Dawson Park Concert 2011

It will be another busy summer of great family friendly events in Dawson Park this year!  The Dawson Park Concert Committee, made up of a few Eliot Neighborhood Association board members, a concert loving resident, and a couple employees from Portland Parks & Recreation, have raised enough sponsorships from our local businesses to host 4 concerts and a movie this summer!  These are free to the public and are wonderful events taking place in our own neighborhood.  Bring your family, your friends, your dog (on a leash please) a blanket or low “beach” chairs, and your picnic basket.

Obo Addy the Okropong Dancers visit the crowd at a Dawson Park Concert

Dawson Park felt alive this summer with so many fantastic events.

In cooperation with Portland Parks and Recreation, the Dawson Park Concert Committee raised enough money from local businesses and generous concert goers to host 4 fabulous concerts in July and August.  Neighbors and families from all over Portland were treated with an eclectic variety of free music throughout the summer.

2010 Concert in Dawson Park

Hello Neighbors!  Amazingly enough, summer is just around the corner and your Dawson Park Concert Series Committee has been hard at work gaining sponsors so we can again host some amazing free concerts in Dawson Park this July.  Thanks to sponsor and audience generosity we managed to snag some great music last season, drawing record-breaking and increasingly diverse crowds to the gazebo.  We are working towards hosting 4 concerts this year which will be held on Wednesdays in July at 6:30pm to dusk.  No general fund money from Parks & Recreation underwrites these concerts, which means we raise every penny through the work of our concert committee, gathering sponsors from local businesses and donations from concert lovers.

Post Blazer Game Victory Celebration Spot

The Pods at Gotham Tavern

One of the many reasons we moved into the Eliot neighborhood was its proximity to so many great businesses, downtown Portland, and the Rose Garden.  My husband and I have been half-season Portland Trailblazer ticket holders for several years now and love going to games.  My Blazer fan co-workers who mostly live on the west side tend to complain on game night since they know they have a long drive or max ride ahead of them and have to fight with the crowds and traffic in order to get to the game.  Not us however!  It’s so easy for us to leave our house just 15 minutes prior to tip-off and either walk or catch the number #4 or #44 on North Vancouver for a short bus ride to the Rose Garden.

Weekend Morning Coffee Treat

Goldrush Coffee Bar

On the weekends I like to walk over to one of our neighborhood coffee shops to indulge in a latte and bagel for breakfast.  Over the past few years I’ve become a regular at Goldrush Coffee Bar.  With its brick interior, old hardwood floors, and rotating art, the vibe inside Goldrush is very Portland.  I tend to be a creature of habit and get the same breakfast almost every weekend so the baristas all know my order.  Occasionally around the holidays I order the pumpkin spiced latte and a peppermint mocha for my husband instead of the usual vanilla latte and regular mocha.  Also, during the hot summer days I’ll sometimes change my drink to iced for a real shake up.
