We are Project Grow. We offer good services for people with and without disabilities. This whole area is inclusion and everyone is allowed to come in here. It is also an employment job for people with and without disabilities, it gives you something to do and make money. You can come here and have good things to do, stay busy, go to dances. We have a community garden; it makes the world a better place, we are planting things. Mondays and Wednesday are homemade art day. We also do a haunted house and it is amazing. We like to go to coffee in the neighborhood and last Monday went to Powell’s.

In 2009, Solarize Northeast helped 200 Northeast Portland residents install solar electric (photovoltaic) panels on their homes. In 2012, the 2nd round of Solarize Northeast aims to double the number of solar electric systems in Northeast Portland.

Not only can you add food scraps – from meat to bones to dairy – to your green roll cart, you have a new place to scrape your holiday plates and holiday leftovers. From the Thanksgiving turkey to the holiday ham, leftovers can join your yard debris in your green roll cart to be turned into nutrient-rich compost to nourish yards and gardens.
Most Portland residents can add food scraps, along with yard debris, to their green Portland Composts! roll carts. This means that residents can turn meat, dairy, bones, vegetables and grains into nutrient-rich compost for fertilizing yards and gardens.
As you get used to scraping plates into your kitchen pail and tossing leftovers into your green roll cart, here are a few tips to make the transition easy.
Tierra Educational Center in in Eliot Neighborhood is offering a unique full-immersion trip to Pátzcuaro, Mexico this December 10-18th. The center opened in 2009, with a mission to offer small group Spanish and ESL services to help bridge communication and cultural barriers between the growing immigrant population and the community at large.
Uroboros is a company named for a symbol of a dragon eating its tail – symbolic of alchemy, the “ancient art” of turning base metals into gold. Eliot’s Uroboros combines sand and other ingredients to produce art glass in 150 sophisticated color combinations in over a dozen styles and textures. Uroboros colors stem from chemicals used in making the glass. Gold produces pinks and purples, copper green, red or aqua blue, cobalt deep blue, and so on. Textures result from rollers used on the molten glass, and manipulation, such as pushing the molten glass to produce ripples.
In partnership with the City of Portland’s Office of Neighborhood Involvement, the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods is offering $23,794 in small grant funds and $6,650 in graffiti abatement funds to neighborhood, business and community-based groups. NECN will offer $1,000-$4,000 per project within the Neighborhood Small Grant program and up to $2,500 per graffiti abatement project.
It seems we got the good weather just as school is starting again. Allies of Eliot, a group of eight PSU community development students, has produced a historic walking tour of Eliot based on a series of interviews conducted by the Eliot Oral Histories Project and on community outreach conducted for the walking tour. The tour is self-guided and consists of an informational booklet with historical photos, and corresponding audio tracks taken from the interviews. Booklets and audio players will be available for checkout from Dishman Community Center, where the tour begins and ends. A condensed brochure version of the booklet and audio mp3s will be available for free download from the project website this summer.

Only 8 months away from opening its doors in February 2012, the new home for The Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel is 70 percent complete. The hospital will better care for the community by dramatically increasing its capacity to serve kids and families. The new home is nearly four times the size of the current hospital, with nine-stories, 334,000 square-feet and 165 beds. Physicians, nurses and staff will be able to provide holistic care in a world-class family-centered healing environment for the growing number of children in our community with medical needs.
