Lee Perlman, Age 64, Found Dead at His Eliot Home

Very sad news this week as Lee Perlman was found dead on Friday at his home on Brazee Street by Portland Police. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As the news passed through the neighborhood, there was an outpouring of sadness and support as neighbors shared memories of Lee at the Eliot Ice Cream Social in Dawson Park this past Monday. Plans for a memorial service are not yet available, but this post will update as more information comes in.

City Delays Projects, Sets Timelines

The Portland Parks Department has finally set a timeline for the Dawson Park renovations. After several years of process starting in 2010, the Portland Parks Department is ready to move forward. In September, Dawson Park will be completely closed. The park will go through extensive renovations that will include removing and replacing several paths through the park, replacing a number of game tables, and removing eight (8) trees while pruning several others.

Vacancy at the top

There comes a time in every chairperson’s life when they realize that they don’t want to have this job forever. As of right now, I have been acting as the newsletter editor in addition to being the chair of the neighborhood. The last person who held both of these roles, Clint Lundmark, has done a good job illustrating to me that this is not a sustainable amount of work for one neighbor to shoulder.

Bylaws Update

The Eliot Neighborhood Association has a rich history. Founded in 1969 during the Model Cities program under President Lyndon Johnson’s administration, we have been around a long time. After thinking about that I don’t want to start that far back. The bylaws, in their current form, go back to 1992. They were amended in 1993, 1996, and 1999, and they have been good enough for the past 14 years. Why update them now?

I’ve lived in Eliot for 5 years now, and Martin Luther King, Junior Boulevard (MLK) is less than half a block from my house. If I had to use one word to describe it I would say ‘highway’ probably. The traffic is what defines MLK, slow and busy at rush hour, and fast and sparse throughout the rest of the day.
