How Tall is 85 Feet?
An Eliot Neighbor is planning to tether 100 balloons today and send them up 85 feet. Why? A development proposal for the west end of the block surrounded by Fremont, Williams and Ivy calls for a portion of the building on the Williams and Fremont corner to be 85 feet tall.
New Seasons Market Williams Avenue Job Fair
The New Season Market on the corner of Williams and Fremont is getting closer to opening – expected in September. As part of preparing for opening day, New Seasons Market is hosting a job fair, primarily for the new store, but possibly for others as well, on Friday June 28th.

Older Issues of Eliot News Now Online
Have you ever been curious about what was happening in the neighborhood in the past? Electronic issues of Eliot News from 2006 on have been posted eliotneighborhood.org since 2007. But what about older issues? Recently, issues from 1999 – 2005 have been converted to PDF if possible, or scanned into PDF format and posted as well. Now you can find out what was happening a decade ago!
MLK Gateway Completed
The idea of a “gateway” on the triangle parcel where Grand Ave connects with MLK appears in the 1993 “Adopted Eliot Neighborhood Plan”. In August of 2012 the site hosted a dedication ceremony for the park which commemorates the history of the region as well as the namesake for Martin Luther King Boulevard. Finally, a primary entrance to Eliot Neighborhood and all of Northeast Portland has become what was envisioned long ago.
Movie in Dawson Park Tonight
Looking for something to do tonight to kick off your Labor Day Weekend? Why not spend it in your neighborhood park listening to music and watching a movie?
Melao de Cuba draws big crowd
The drummers were drumming, the dancers were dancing, the horns we’re hooting and boy was the singer singing as Melao de Cuba rocked Dawson park Cuban style.
Finally, a Sports Bar
Gone are the days when going to a sports bar meant visiting a smoke filled, dingy bar with greasy food. Now there is a choice when you want to join fellow fans or rivals for a fun spirited couple of hours cheering on your favorite team. In the last few years several “new generation” sports bars have popped up around town, but none here in Eliot until now.
Dawson Park Concerts 2012
Dawson Park will host four free concerts this summer! The gazebo will be the stage for the live performances. Concerts begin at 6:30 PM and last about 2 hours. Best of all, the concerts are free!
Good in the Neighborhood Parade
The Good in the Hood parade paraded through Eliot on it’s way to the Good in the Hood Multicultural Music & Food Festival. A little bit of rain on the parade did not stop the march through the neighborhood. “What rain?” said a parade goer.
Eliot from Above Then and Now

Houses, houses, houses! In 1955 houses dominated the landscape in Eliot. This view of Eliot from above was taken as part of a larger photo of the downtown area. The image shows the neighborhood before the massive changes that came in the 60’s and 70’s. Memorial Coliseum had not yet been built, I-5 had not yet tore through the neighborhood, the Emanual Hospital campus had not yet sprawled into the neighborhood and Fremont was just a street (not quite in the picture) and not also a bridge. Also worth noticing, Lower Albina still had homes, Albina park was square, the grid pattern covered most of the area, and the now vacant lots around Russell near Williams and Vancouver had buildings.
The Green Garage Opens in Eliot
The biking community in Portland continues to grow, making our city healthy and cleaner with fewer car on the roads. One of the major bike-ways in Portland passes though Eliot’s Lower Albina area. A new bike shop opened last fall just off of Interstate on North Mississippi. The location is very convenient to all the Interstate cyclists who pass by every day.
A Little Greener
On Saturday February 11th Eliot neighborhood turned a little less gray and little more greener. New trees were planted in the neighborhood at the annual Friend of Trees neighborhood planting. As has been tradition the last few years, Eliot joined Boise, Humboldt and King to plant tress in North and Northeast Portland.
New Seasons Coming to Eliot
In case you hadn’t already heard…a News Seasons Market is coming to Eliot! On January 5th New Seasons Market announced they intend to open a store on the “Bakery Blocks” – the parcel of land bordered by Cook, Williams, Fremont and Vancouver. The 13th New Seasons store is expected to open in 2013.
