This summer, dozens of tree lovers will explore the Boise and Eliot neighborhoods on a mission to identify, map, measure, and assess the condition of every street tree. This inventory is the first and most comprehensive street tree inventory ever performed in our neighborhoods. The project is being organized by Boise and Eliot Tree Team, a group of neighbors committed to improving their urban forest. A partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation, the inventory is the first step in expanding, diversifying, and protecting trees in the Boise and Eliot neighborhoods.

Children, families and staff at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel were visited by six amazing superheroes from Millennium Building Services(MBS) to celebrate Superhero Day on Monday, May 19, 2014. Superheroes descended nine stories of glass at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel, cleaning windows all the way down. Batman, Robin, Spider-Man, Superman and The Flash brought fun and adventure to kids, families and hospital staff.

In April or May, Eliot Neighborhood hosts the annual “Spring Cleanup”. It’s an event where residents bring junk and other trash-worthy stuff to a central location and drop it off for a small fee. The idea is to make it easier for residents to clean up around their house and property. It is effective at helping people keep their part of the neighborhood clean, but it doesn’t really clean up the neighborhood. You can help by making cleanup a part of your daily routine.

You have probably heard “The Joy of Gardening” in radio and TV commercials for a local department store or seen the book by the same name.  Sometimes, I question that joy! I tell myself “gardening IS fun and rewarding.” However there is also that constant war of you versus what seems like everything else trying to destroy your garden.  Between the dog digging, the chickens scratching, aphids eating, squirrels burying, and mother nature’s unpredictable weather there are challenges.  A few years ago I discovered yet another big enemy – the wireworm.

If you check out the Portland Crime Map for our neighborhoods, it’s apparent that theft from cars and vehicle theft are two of the most common type of crimes in our neighborhoods. It’s also apparent when you’re biking down a busy street and see a smattering of broken glass in front of you that you have to quickly zigzag around.

It’s time to clear out the clutter from your closets, rooms, basement, yard and garage. Bring your unused and unusable junk of all sizes and shapes. Clean out your surplus metal, furniture, clothes and more. Fees range from $5 and up. No yard debris, construction debris, raw garbage or hazardous materials can be accepted.

Annual Auction Supports Irvington School

The annual Irvington Auction is coming soon! This year, we will be celebrating with TOTALLY AWESOME 80s. The fun event will be held nearby at the Left Bank Annex, across from the Rose Garden, on Friday, March 14 at 5:30 p.m. The evening begins with the silent auction, where patrons will have the chance to browse through a wide variety of silent auction items from massages to wine to language lessons. Once the silent auction closes, attendees will enjoy a lovely dinner and exciting live auction featuring trips, unique local experiences and one-of-a-kind student classroom art pieces. It will be a TOTALLY AWESOME night to remember.

Tree Inventory

For the past four years, Portland Parks and Recreation (PP&R) has sponsored street tree inventories in neighborhoods across Portland as a way to assess the condition of the urban forest and build community around this shared resource. Thus far, the project has collected information about the location, species, health, and size of nearly 70,000 trees in 17 neighborhoods.

The Beauty and Livability Committee was formed in 2012 to implement the Neighborhood Livability Partnership. This one-of-a-kind Partnership between the Lloyd Community Association, Eliot neighborhood, and the Portland Arena Management (Trail Blazers) is a unique opportunity for political support, collaboration and physical investments. The focus of improvement is the area between Weidler and Russell from south to north and between NE 7th to the river, an area plagued by sports-related traffic and parking issues. In April of 2013, the Eliot Board of Directors voted to accept funding from the Neighborhood Livability Partnership for two projects. The Board approved the funds for planting 14 street trees and the Intersection Repair, a painting on Tillamook and Rodney Avenue, completed by over 50 volunteers who designed and completed the project in June 2013. Unused funding from 2013 will roll forward since the funding from the Trail Blazers offers three-consecutive years at $5,000 per year for improvements. The Beauty team is hoping that they will be able to partner with landowners for matching funds to implement larger projects.

Jubel Perkins Memorial for NARA

Many of you are familiar with the NARA Indian Health Clinic located on the corner of N. Morris and Williams but may not know much about the organization. Founded in 1970 in Portland, the Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest, Inc. is an Indian-owned, Indian-operated, non-profit agency. Originally an outpatient substance abuse treatment center, NARA NW now operates a residential family treatment center, an outpatient treatment center, a family resource program, transitional housing for Native women and Children, a primary health care clinic and Totem Lodge which serves as their mental health resource location. All services are centered on the family as it is NARA NW’s philosophy that, “Without the family circle there will be no future.”
