TriMet is facing a $13.5 million budget shortfall which is forcing them to make a 5% cut in programs and services agency-wide. After taking a number of steps to reduce costs and improve efficiency, TriMet has proposed service reductions and discontinuations effective September 2009. For Eliot Neighborhood bus line 33-Fremont and the Max Yellow Line may see some changes.

Neighborhood Graffiti Cleanup

On Saturday March 21 volunteers from the neighborhood joined the City of Portland Graffiti Abatement Program to cleanup graffiti in Eliot Neighborhood. Coffee and donuts were waiting for volunteers as they showed up at the meeting place on the corner of Williams and San Rafael. After getting instructions volunteers dispersed throughout the neighborhood with their provided supplies to cleanup.
Neighborhood History Book
If you have read many of the postings from the “History” category on eliotneighborhood.org or if you are a regular reader of the Eliot News newsletter you probably recall reading about a history book in the works. Author Roy E Roos, who has written many Eliot News articles over the years, finished the book last fall.

Proposed Broadway Name Change
The City of Portland is currently evaluating options for renaming a street after civil rights leader Cesar Chavez. After a failed attempt in 2007 to rename North Interstate after the Latino labor and civil rights leader, the Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard Committee has initiated the street renaming process. This time Broadway, Grand and 39th “streets” are potential candidates.

Major League Soccer Coming to Portland
Today at a press conference held at the Hilton in downtown Portland, Major League Soccer officials announced they were awarding Portland a MLS team. This announcement came a little over a week after city council voted 3 – 2 to approve soccer.
King Farmers Market
Starting May 3 there will be a Farmers Market about a mile north of Eliot Neighborhood. Portland Farmers Market in partnership with Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods plans to open the Sunday market in the King Neighborhood.
Dawson Park Gazebo on YouTube
Portland Development Commission has published a video on YouTube about the Dawson Park Gazebo renovation. The video shows a brief history of the structure and some footage of the construction.
The Leotard Moves to Eliot
A few weeks ago The Leotard made the move from the Lloyd Center Mall to Eliot Neighborhood. They opened their doors earlier this month in the Black and White building on the corner of MLK and Brazee.
Valentine’s Day Tree Planting
There are 13 more trees in Eliot Neighborhood thanks to the Friends of Trees planting on Saturday February 14. Eliot Neighborhood received a Valentine’s Day gift of trees along with Boise, King, Humbolt, Peidmont and Sabin neighborhoods.

Graham Street Commons
In the Real Estate section of the Oregonian on January 18th there is an article about the urban infill housing project near the corner of Graham and Williams. Graham Street Commons is a “common green” project that has 4 buildings planned. The commons now has 3 single family homes with a duplex yet to be built.
