At a very busy intersection where cars, bicycles and buses pass every day is a building that a lot of Portland residents have probably never entered. However, each weekend during the month of November, everyone who is simply curious or an avid collector is welcome to join in the fun in exploring the largest model railroad exhibit west of the Mississippi.
Yet another perfectly good home in Eliot Neighborhood now sits in rubble after it was demolished yesterday. The 125 year old home at 623 NE Thompson was ripped down, forever erasing it from the neighborhood.
We are in year 3 of Portland’s Comprehensive Plan process, which is almost 5 years late, mostly due to Portland’s famous “process.” The good news is that process provided Eliot with the opportunity to shape the Plan in more favorable ways. I will end with the bad news.
Uncontrolled blood pressure is proven to be a major of cause heart attacks and strokes. Controlling blood pressure is the number one way to reduce the likelihood of both those health issues. Increasing awareness is the first step in reducing the number of people who could be afflicted with either of the cardiovascular issues.
The old bank building on the corner of MLK and Russell where the Marinello School of Beauty used to be has been sold. It was purchased by a long time business owner in Eliot who has rented it as office space for himself and Fishpeople, a packaged seafood company.
In a small corner of NE Portland sits an old established parish, now home to the Eliot Neighborhood Association, and the Land Use and Transportation Committee meetings. Unknown to neighbors is the re-emergence of The Youth Café at this location. The program is geared for school aged youth up to the age of 18 to help work on academic tutoring, teaching life skills, nutrition and health, and incorporating fitness components into their daily lives. This is a public non-profit program that is founded in the church but is welcoming all community members.
Congratulations to Ashley Berry, the winner of the fall photo contest! These were all taken at the Garlington Wellness Garden, which is adjacent to NE Morris St. and MLK Jr. Blvd, in the Garlington Center. They are very proud of the harvests this year and are happy to be a part of the neighborhood!
Let me begin by thanking the many Board members and volunteers who have made the last six months one of the most open and engaging times in my history of being involved on the Board since 2009. I am retiring as Chair but plan to continue to be involved to hand over the reins and to challenge you to volunteer with Eliot.

This fall, the Portland Streetcar expanded service on both sides of the river. The Central Loop became two new lines: the A Loop and B Loop. When the new routes opened on September 12th, they started carrying riders between Portland’s East and West sides and connecting popular Portland destinations via the new Tilikum Crossing.
Eliot is becoming more of a cultural destination every day. On October 2nd, Eliot’s newest art gallery opened its doors in the building that houses Bridges Café. Lloydean Presents art gallery, is owned and operated by Jullie Lloydean. Former office manager turned gallery owner, Lloydean is excited to start her next epic journey with a creative space that hopefully will be officially included in First Friday Eastside Artwalk. Lloydean is trying to get First Friday to expand their boundaries to include her gallery. The gallery will be open Tuesday through Friday noon to 6:00pm and Saturday and Sunday noon to 5:00pm.

Dan Neal, developer from Paradigm Properties in Eugene, has notified the neighbors around NE 7th and Russell that excavation will begin shortly for the development of the 6 story building that has been planned to be built among the single family homes on the border of Eliot and Irvington neighborhoods.
