Tucked away in the depths of the Lower Albina industrial area is an urban winery. You won’t find rolling hills of grape plants or majestic old oaks, but you will find good wine. Seven Bridges Winery is located among warehouses, storage lots and railroad tracks right here in Eliot Neighborhood.

Mod Physique opened in Eliot September 2013. You may have spotted them on the corner of Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and Graham Street with the A frame sign of a girl in a ballet pose. Mod Physique is a fusion class of high intensity cardio, weights, ballet barre, and Pilates exercises. Their classes work every major muscle group in your body creating long lean muscle vs. bulk. Each week the class changes to keep the body challenged and prevent people from getting complacent. The class also works your heart, coordination, balance, and endurance. The owner, Jessa Freeman created it to keep herself and her Zumba® Fitness students in shape. “I can walk into a ballet class and keep up even after 7 years of not being in the studio,” one customer said. What attracts people to the studio? The challenging classes for a variety of fitness levels with personal attention and the fun environment. You may find yourself working muscles you didn’t know existed.

For more information on the concerts see Dawson Park Summer Events 2014.

Summer is here and that means another great season of entertainment at Dawson Park! As you may have noticed, the park has been undergoing an extensive remodel over the last year and the concerts will serve as a great way to celebrate the new and improved park. The 2nd concert will begin early with a Park Dedication Ceremony. This year, our committee raised enough money to host 4 concerts and one movie night! These events are Free To The Public and are a great way to spend an evening out in the neighborhood. Concerts start at 6:30pm. During movie night, live performances by local musicians and free popcorn begin at 6:30pm and the movie starts at dusk. Here is our fantastic lineup:

This year, Eliot Neighbors will once again be participating in Portland’s “Village Building Convergence” by means of repainting last year’s installation at the intersection of NE Rodney Avenue & NE Tillamook Street (Eliot Community Crossing). Everyone is invited to join us and pitch in!

The tag line of Ex Novo Brewing Company captures the essence of Joel Gregory’s mission — ‘Better Beer for the Greater Good’. The brewery’s mission is to make high-quality craft beer and is committed to donating net proceeds to selected non-profits. The brewery is emphasizing its brews, and as Gregory puts it, “We take beer here seriously.”

Walking around Eliot, there is a wide range of restaurants, coffee shops, and retail, everything from barbershops to the Nike Outlet store. There are parks and a first rate hospital, even a brand new grocery store. With first rate bike lanes, great bars, and public transit, what more could you ask for? Ah, but what about a place to work out? When I moved into Eliot in March 2008, I was hoping for a fitness studio close to my house. Luckily, Portland Team Fitness arrived on NE MLK right across Fremont in the King Neighborhood Area in May 2008.

Bella Mi Soap Company is one of the newest additions to the North Williams Corridor. At a time when many products you find on the shelves are laden with chemicals or tainted by greenwashing, it’s refreshing to find a business that actually lives up to the principles of sustainability.

You may recall last September seeing promotional materials for a block party in the southern part of the neighborhood. That same weekend Portland had that unseasonal cold rainy and windy storm. The block party was supposed to be Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider welcome to the neighborhood. Unfortunately it did not happen, but Rev Nat’s is still here.
The cidery and public taproom is located in the newly refurbished “Trade Bindery” building. The bulk of their space is the cidery where apples are turned into bubbly beverages. However, they reserved a small portion for the “public taproom” where you can go and taste a flight of cider, get a pint, or buy a bottle to take with you.

One of the most recent additions to North Williams Avenue, WineUp on Williams opened this fall in Eliot’s historic Rinehart Building. Recently, I stopped by to take advantage of the bar’s “Tightwad Tuesday” deals and to chat with co-owner Wayne Oppenheimer.
Bunk Bar is the latest rendition from the Bunk family to occupy the space under the Wonder Ballroom. About a year ago a new restaurant named Trigger – billed as “a Bunk Joint” opened up. It was a sit-down restaurant featuring quality Tex-Mex. Over time they changed up the menu a bit, some for the bad, some for the good. In June the Beer Can Chicken was featured in Portland Monthly. Eventually they switched to counter ordering and no longer had wait staff. That pretty much marked the end of Trigger. Now, still a part of the family, the space has become another Bunk Bar.
About a half mile north of Eliot, in the King Neighborhood, is a small neighborhood venue perfect for watching local theater. Now in their sixth season, Portland Playhouse will be presenting a family friendly production of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens this December. As a neighborhood theater, they want to ensure all their neighbors are able to attend. Eliot Neighbors can see the show on Saturday December 14th at 7:30 for a 20% discount.
