Nyla Jano, owner of Torrain here in Portland, was designing the women’s line for a skate company in California when she realized she was not doing enough. Her background working with environmental organizations and social work companies sparked a need to help others. “I always felt weird being just a clothing designer,” Jano said. And so, she teamed up with artisan groups in Cambodia to create a bag line made from recycled materials, such as rice bags, fish feed bags, cement bags, and magazines.

Keep the Neighborhood Clean!

On April 7th a few neighbors got together to discuss ways we could help make Eliot a more attractive place.  Some great ideas were bandied about, and we’d love additional input as we think of ways to get as many neighbors involved with keeping our neighborhood clean. Our second meeting is scheduled for May 6th at 7:30 at 2308 NE Rodney Ave.

Six grants of $2,000 each will be awarded by Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods (NECN) for collaborative, community-based projects in Inner N/NE Portland.

What can a $2,000 grant accomplish? Last year, artist and educator Sharita Towne used an NECN grant to fund the groundbreaking “De-gentrifying Portland” project. A partnership among several N/NE Portland organizations, De-gentrifying Portland was a summer program for youth of color, which included training in filmmaking, a deep exploration of N/NE Portland history, and a standing-room-only public event to screen the students’ films.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation is converting NE Rodney into a family friendly bike route, known as a Neighborhood Greenway. Neighborhood Greenways are a type of street treatment that provides a safe shared-use environment for bicycling. The road conversion will run south to north from NE Broadway to NE Killingsworth and offer a calmer alternative bike route to the soon to be improved Williams street bikeway.

Historic Homes Headed for Demolition

623Thompson

There are two 125-year-old houses in Eliot that are going to be demolished if the neighborhood doesn’t rally to save them. The best option would be to purchase them from the developer who owns them, Guy Bryant of GPB Construction, or failing that, to convince him not to tear them down to build his ultramodern 40-foot-tall rowhouses that, needless to say, don’t fit in to the neighborhood. The houses were built at the time the City of Albina was its own city.

Mod Physique
Jessa outside Mod Physiquue

Mod Physique opened in Eliot September 2013. You may have spotted them on the corner of Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and Graham Street with the A frame sign of a girl in a ballet pose. Mod Physique is a fusion class of high intensity cardio, weights, ballet barre, and Pilates exercises. Their classes work every major muscle group in your body creating long lean muscle vs. bulk. Each week the class changes to keep the body challenged and prevent people from getting complacent. The class also works your heart, coordination, balance, and endurance. The owner, Jessa Freeman created it to keep herself and her Zumba® Fitness students in shape. “I can walk into a ballet class and keep up even after 7 years of not being in the studio,” one customer said. What attracts people to the studio? The challenging classes for a variety of fitness levels with personal attention and the fun environment. You may find yourself working muscles you didn’t know existed.
