Introducing…The Boise Eliot Native Grove
The Boise Eliot Native Grove on N Ivy St. is transforming an unimproved right-of-way into a native plant and pollinator grove. Situated just to the north of the Fremont Bridge ramp, the land is owned by Portland Bureau of Transportation but cannot be developed due to a number of utilities running underneath.

Waterline Relocation Work
Work to replace and relocate waterlines that will conflict with sewer and stormwater construction will begin again in June. After completing waterline relocation work, the Water Bureau will perform a series of quality control tests and may identify the need for additional work.

Just as distressing, research shows these individuals’ deaths are typically not due to mental illness, but to other health problems – hypertension, asthma, diabetes – that haven’t been adequately treated.

This quick, simple, and meat-free vegan taco recipe will surely have everyone begging for more!
Vegan Tacos
Ingredients:
- Soft tortillas
- Small onion (diced)
- 1 cup of TVP (texturized vegetable protein)
- 2-3 tablespoons of Taco seasoning (bulk)
- 1/4-1/2 cup of water
- Taco/Hot Sauce
- Lettuce
- Tomato
Directions:
- Sautee diced onions until brown
- Boil 7/8 cup of water and pour over TVP (mix well) let sit for at least 10 mins.
- Add the rehydrated TVP to onions and sauté for 3-5 mins (longer if needed)
- Mix water with taco seasoning in a bowl
- Pour over TVP and onions (mix well)
- Bring to a quick boil then reduce heat to low; simmer about 10-15 mins
- Heat tortillas in oven until warm
- Fill tortillas with meatless dish
- Add all your favorite taco trimmings ( i.e. lettuce, tomato, taco sauce, etc. )

The PDX Reporter app is a convenient way to interact with city bureaus and report problems and maintenance issues within Portland city limits. This app was previously released for iPhone and Android mobile devices, but now it’s available as a web app that can be used on any web-enabled smartphone, tablet or desktop computer. The previous mobile-only version of the app will be retired in late 2017.
Voicing the Voiceless on Open Signal’s Public Access Cable Channels
Standing on the shoulders of Portland Community Media’s 35-year history, Open Signal has filled five public access cable channels with an inimitable selection of programming since its launch in January, 2017. The organization offers classes, installations, and community outreach programs, but its commitment to “creativity, technology, and social change” is most obvious in its locally created content, which highlights local voices and local issues.

Ray Shellmire is the founder of Shellmire Unlimited, P.C., offering individuals, families, small groups, and organizations counseling services for personal development, wellness, domestic violence, depression, anxiety, the harmful effects of racial oppression, discrimination and inequality, and other bio-psycho-social issues. They also offer massage therapy. Mr. Shellmire began his practice in 1991 because previous employment revealed that clients were only interested in him and how he fulfilled their needs for counsel and support services. Leasing space at Oregon Association for Minority Entrepreneurs (OAME), he provided a therapeutic environment for clients. A year later, his practice grew, so he trained other clinicians to do cultural specific training, and by the year 2000, he had an entire wing at OAME. In 2012, he moved and expanded to Vanport Plaza, Vancouver WA., Gresham and to Mid-K Plaza in 2014.

Streetcar Spurs Housing Development
New data released by Portland Streetcar shows that the early vision for a streetcar system that spurs housing development and improves transit access is generating results. Conducted by EcoNorthwest, the data analysis shows that 3,130 new multifamily housing units were built along the Streetcar corridor in 2016, the most in the system’s 16-year history. Another 5,600 units are currently planned or under construction.
Neighborhood Noodles
The steam from cooking noodles drifts easily across 7th avenue into the Eliot neighborhood. The pale brick building on the corner of Tillamook doesn’t give much away, only a simple sign in English and Chinese characters – America’s Noodle Inc.
The Hill Block Project Update
A Community-led Effort to Develop the Vacant Block on the Legacy Emanuel Campus
On August 1, 2017, Prosper Portland, the City of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, and Legacy Health announced a collaborative project to develop the Hill Block property. All three have agreed to work together to facilitate a community-driven process that will determine a community vision and development proposal for the vacant site.

Rebuilding Together Portland is a nonprofit organization that assists low-income homeowners with home repairs at no cost to the homeowner. We help the elderly, people with disabilities, families with children, and Veterans throughout the City. Repairs span from carpentry, plumbing, and electrical, to painting, debris removal, and more. We complete most the work on the National Rebuild Day- the last weekend of April; and right now, we are looking for homeowners who we can assist on April 28th, 2018!
Trauma Nurse Lands Statewide Award
Joe Tanner isn’t the typical recipient of the Oregon Health Authority’s Life Saving Medal. It’s usually given to an emergency medical technician, or EMT. Tanner is a registered nurse on the Neuro Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center who cares for patients brought in through the hospital’s emergency room. What makes this unique is what he did for himself that will help others.
