Back in 2003 when we moved into the neighborhood there weren’t nearly as many places to eat. Sure, Popeye’s has been on MLK for a while now. Billy Reed’s was also serving up good food, but was just about ready to start the dreadful transition that had it change styles, ownership and names over and over again. Then in 2004 the level of cuisine in Eliot changed…starting with Echo.

Once again Dawson Park will host three concerts this summer in July (and August). The gazebo, renovated in the the Spring of 2008, will be the stage for the live performances. Last year three great acts graced the gazebo and this year’s lineup looks fantastic. Concerts begin at 6:30 PM and last about 2 hours. Best of all, the concerts are free!
Crews from the City of Portland replanted trees in the median along MLK in mid –May. Prior to the planting about half of the tree wells along the boulevard sat empty and bare.

Project Hope: Building Futures and Restoring Lives
When Scott Espedal was a kid growing up on the streets of Irvington he knew what it was like to see a future that held little promise. Raised by a single mom, in a home where the month too often outstretched the money, the odds could look insurmountable. That’s why, some 30 years later and now a successful builder, he was moved to reach out to disadvantaged kids and offer what he knows can make the difference—jobs and a chance to complete an education.

If you have been around Russell Street near MLK recently you probably noticed a new hip store in the neighborhood called Adorn. The small urban clothing and accessory shop opened last September in the same building as Project Hope.
The Eliot Neighborhood Spring Cleanup is Saturday May 16 from 9 am to 1 pm. Bring your old furniture, debris, junk, yard debris, lumber, and metal. Please separate materials. Bicycles and bike parts can be dropped off for free.
The spring cleanup is a sustainable event. Metal recyclers are on hand to collect metal. Yard debris and lumber is eventually turned into compost. Use bicycles are donated and if needed repaired for re use.
My new favorite neighborhood bar is the Secret Society Lounge located on the 2nd floor of a newly renovated 1907 building on NE Russell St. It’s small and cozy with a fantastic wooden bar. My husband would die to have one exactly like it in our basement, but maybe a touch smaller.
At the April 13th General Membership meeting the Eliot Neighborhood Association voted to oppose the current plan for development of a minor league baseball stadium in the Rose Quarter and to work on a Good Neighbor Agreement. Though the Rose Quarter is not in Eliot, it borders the neighborhood and has an impact on neighbors.
The City of Portland is currently evaluating options for renaming Broadway, Grand Ave or NE 39th after civil rights leader Cesar E Chavez. At the April 13th Eliot Neighborhood Association Spring General Membership meeting a motion was brought to the floor to oppose renaming a street after Cezar E Chavez.
Planners from the City of Portland will be presenting draft site concepts for the Rose Quarter AAA baseball stadium and area redevelopment, and taking questions and comments from the public.
