Community gardens and cooperative gardens, despite sounding like they offer the same service, differ in essential ways. Community gardens rent plots of land to individuals and those individuals tend to their plot and only to their plot. In a cooperative garden, members share the plots. That means making decisions, planting, and harvesting food together.

Vibe Cafe, located at 2808 NE MLK Jr Blvd, is an indispensable local business. It doubles as a laundromat and a cafe, serving residents of the apartments above it and the surrounding community. Vibe Cafe has been closed for a few months now because they are investing in a remodel.

The scent of roasting meat from BBQ Soul made my mouth water as I approached the cart, and wasted no time in ordering a pulled pork sandwich, selecting the maple-infused BBQ sauce to add to it. I knew the second I sank my teeth into my sandwich that I made the right choice. Lachisa Gill, one of the operators of the family-run business, also speaks particularly highly of the BBQ chicken that the cart prepares. BBQ Soul has only been in this pod for the past three weeks.

Thai Palace serves delicious, generous portions of classic, MSG-free Thai food. The Massaman curry with chicken is rich and creamy and served beside fluffy jasmine rice. And don’t skip the iced matcha green tea with tapioca bubbles. Perfectly refreshing!
Bridges Café and Catering is a restaurant in which the love of family and friends is palpable, both in the overall environment and in the taste of the food itself. The moment you walk into Bridges, you are enveloped by a sense of warmth and coziness. The café is intimate, and is filled with bright colors that lift the spirits even during the darkest days of winter. Coffee mugs are cheerfully mismatched, tabletops are covered in beautiful mosaics, and the scent of delicious food wafts through the air. After beginning many a weekend morning at Bridges, I sat down with Laura Lane-Ruckman, one of the owners of the restaurant, to learn more about the family-operated business and its connection to Eliot.

Portland Open Studios is thrilled to announce the list of over a dozen artists in NE Portland who will be opening their doors this October as part of the Portland Open Studios Tour, the city’s largest annual art studio tour held in the second and third weekends of October. This group is part of a larger group of 106 artists in communities across the city who will participate in the event.

Northeast Portland used to be a hot bed of jazz clubs back in the 1960’s. Audiences enjoyed a plethora of musicians as they came through Portland including some really big names such as Coleman Hawkins and Thelonious Monk. Now, as we have all seen, the neighborhood has changed, the jazz clubs are gone, and there are varying opinions about the motivations and impact that gentrification has had. However, there is movement afoot to bring jazz back to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

According to their website, Fetch Doggie Daycare provides a fun, safe, and loving environment where dogs can socialize, frolic, and bask in the affection of their experienced staff. They are equipped with approximately 3,200 sq. ft. of indoor play-space, plenty of toys, play-structures and comfy furniture.

Jody Guth, aka Poochie Mama, started her dog walking and pet sitting business 17 years ago. She loves her job and has excellent references from clients who she still works with now after their second and even third dogs!
Poochie Mama take dogs to different local parks Monday through Friday between noon and 4pm. She picks up each dog from their home and then all head out to play for roughly an hour and a half. She can also take out dogs individually.

A sure sign of summer is the increased numbers of people and their dogs lazing about in local parks. Irving Park has a wonderful off-leash area that is sure to delight playful or rambunctious dogs. The off-leash area, bordering the edge of the park on Northeast 7th Avenue, sits at the crest of the hill and offers several benches and picnic tables where humans can rest as their canine companions get all of their exercise for the day.
Eliot neighbors and Open Signal, Portland Community Media Center are planning a neighborhood block party on Saturday, August 26 from 2-10pm.

Hot Diggity! Dog Walking and Pet Sitting Services is a locally and independently owned and operated service based in NE Portland. All of the dog walkers are bonded and insured, and are highly trained in Pet First-Aid, so you can have peace of mind when you’re leaving your pooch with a walker for the afternoon.

Opening Pounce Play and Stay, a local cat hotel, has been a labor of love for Lisa Hernandez, owner, and Jennifer Krause, manager. They both have backgrounds caring and advocating for animals. Lisa used to work as an Animal Control Officer and Cruelty Investigator for the Louisiana SPCA and Jennifer worked for nearly a decade for Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles.
