Air Toxics Monitoring

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency staff will present information and answer questions about air toxics monitoring at the Harriet Tubman Leadership Academy for Young Women. This monitoring is part of a national initiative to understand whether outdoor toxic air pollution from industry, motor vehicles and other sources poses health concerns to schoolchildren. EPA is monitoring for air toxics at 62 schools nationwide.

Spanish and Cultural Education Center Opens

Tierra Educational Center, a locally owned Spanish and Latin American Cultural Center, has opened in Eliot Neighborhood to help bridge the communication and cultural gap between the growing Hispanic population and the community at large. The center offers quality and affordable Spanish classes for all levels, as well as special courses in topics specific to Latin American Culture and History. Tierra also hosts a free Spanish Conversation Club every Friday from 6-8pm, with guided discussion, guest speakers, and film screenings pertaining to Latin American issues.

When Scott Espedal was a kid growing up on the streets of Irvington he knew what it was like to see a future that held little promise. Raised by a single mom, in a home where the month too often outstretched the money, the odds could look insurmountable. That’s why, some 30 years later and now a successful builder, he was moved to reach out to disadvantaged kids and offer what he knows can make the difference—jobs and a chance to complete an education.

Spring Cleanup 2009

The Eliot Neighborhood Spring Cleanup is Saturday May 16 from 9 am to 1 pm.  Bring your old furniture, debris, junk, yard debris, lumber, and metal.  Please separate materials. Bicycles and bike parts can be dropped off for free.

The spring cleanup is a sustainable event.  Metal recyclers are on hand to collect metal.  Yard debris and lumber is eventually turned into compost.  Use bicycles are donated and if needed repaired for re use.

Neighborhood Graffiti Cleanup

On Saturday March 21 volunteers from the neighborhood joined the City of Portland Graffiti Abatement Program to cleanup graffiti in Eliot Neighborhood.   Coffee and donuts were waiting for volunteers as they showed up at the meeting place on the corner of Williams and San Rafael.  After getting instructions volunteers dispersed throughout the neighborhood with their provided supplies to cleanup.
