Residents of south Eliot and others may have noticed all of the colored paint on the street, sidewalk and even parking strips as well as surveyors blocking traffic on MLK weekend mornings. This is all part of planning for the City’s South Eliot Sewer and Storm Water Project. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017, so it is a ways off.

Yet another perfectly good home in Eliot Neighborhood now sits in rubble after it was demolished yesterday. The 125 year old home at 623 NE Thompson was ripped down, forever erasing it from the neighborhood.
We are in year 3 of Portland’s Comprehensive Plan process, which is almost 5 years late, mostly due to Portland’s famous “process.” The good news is that process provided Eliot with the opportunity to shape the Plan in more favorable ways. I will end with the bad news.
The old bank building on the corner of MLK and Russell where the Marinello School of Beauty used to be has been sold. It was purchased by a long time business owner in Eliot who has rented it as office space for himself and Fishpeople, a packaged seafood company.
From outward appearances, Cascadia’s Garlington Center rests quietly along today’s lively Northeast Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard. But inside the center’s front doors is a bustling lobby where every week, hundreds of people go to get the help they need to deal with challenges ranging from mental illness to recovering from drug or alcohol addictions.

Dan Neal, developer from Paradigm Properties in Eugene, has notified the neighbors around NE 7th and Russell that excavation will begin shortly for the development of the 6 story building that has been planned to be built among the single family homes on the border of Eliot and Irvington neighborhoods.
Another historic single family home in Eliot was demolished back in July. At the same time the large old trees were removed leaving a flat, barren lot. The house sat at 2318 NE Rodney and according to a neighbor was occupied by the same family for a very very long time. It had fallen into disrepair over the last 25 or so years. However, like most houses that have been erased from the neighborhood, it is very likely it could have been salvaged and restored into a great starter home for a new family.
There are quite a few projects going up right now in and around Eliot. North Eliot is getting most of the action. The two proposed large six-plus story tower developments at NE Fremont and Williams as well as the project at NE 7th and Russell have driven the most uproar. However, there are a number of other developments being proposed or already under construction.

“It is difficult to predict, especially about the future.”
This quote is rooted in a Danish proverb according to the ever- reliable internet, although it has been attributed to a number of notables. Regardless, it is true. I personally subscribe to the maxim “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” One of Eliot’s predominantly German residents from the 1920s would still recognize many of Eliot’s homes, but would miss the streetcars along MLK and other streets, and the residential community that used to exist west of the gulch occupied by I-5. The number of automobiles would be a shock as would the lack of livestock in rear yards. Even indoor plumbing would be novel. But, their Eliot would still look a lot like ours. Many of the houses would be the same along with the streets, but the street names have changed over the years.
As required by the Portland Zoning Code, Architect Rich Brooks, CIDA and developer Ben McInnis, BENCO initiated contact with the Eliot Land Use and Transportation Committee and presented their plans to build a 5-story micro unit apartment building at 3116 N. Vancouver Ave. The building with a footprint of 36’x44’ will have eighteen 250 sq ft micro apartments expected to rent at between $866 – $898/ unit.
A letter from the Land Use Chair…
Vacant land in Eliot has been one of my biggest annoyances since moving here in 2008. I realize many of you have lived here longer than I have and some of you have even gotten permission to use the vacant land that you experience around you every day. However some of the bigger pieces really leave holes in the urban fabric that surrounds us. Some of the vacant land is used for parking, but at its worst some of our land is used for nothing at all.
Two representatives from the steering committee of Demand Redesign, Susan Stringer and Montse Shepherd, presented a statement to city council on Wednesday, January 28th regarding the development by Dan Neal of Paradigm Properties at NE 7th Avenue and NE Russell Street.
One house, two house, red house blue house, both will be gone soon. The two houses on Cook near Vancouver are slated to be demolished, forever erasing 110 years of history in the neighborhood.
