Tackle The Toilet

Contributed by the Regional Water Providers Consortium

According to the EPA, 10 percent of homes in the U.S. have leaks that waste 90 or more gallons of water day. Toilets are one of the most common culprits – and also one of the easiest to detect and fix. Oftentimes, the most common problem is a worn flapper valve that needs to be replaced. This is a simple and inexpensive fix.

Does the sound of running water from your toilet never stop? Perhaps your toilet runs on and off throughout the day, without being flushed? Or maybe your toilet doesn’t make any noise at all? Either way, many homeowners don’t know when their toilet isn’t working properly—but toilet troubles add up, affecting both the environment and your water bill. Surprisingly, one leaky toilet can fill an entire swimming pool with water after just one year.

Concert Donations Needed!

The Eliot Neighborhood Concert Committee has been hard at work gathering sponsors and creating a fantastic lineup of music for our annual Dawson Park Concert Series and movie night. We are in need of some help however. A couple of our larger sponsors from past years are unable to give this year, so we are still in need of donations and sponsorship.

Crime in the Streets!

Eliot’s reputation as a high crime area, along with NE Portland generally, is undeserved. Crime statistics are skewed by criminal activity directed at visitors from out of the area to the Rose Quarter and Lloyd Center, primarily car prowls and thefts, but thefts from stores and offices as well. As the bank robber Willy Horton said, “You go where the money is.”

Crime Blotter – Summer 2012

By Ofc Peter Helzer

Hello, all.  It looks like the nicer weather is joining us earlier than it did the last couple years.  That’s great for all our outdoor activities, but brings a few perils as well.  The news is good about warning everyone to block 2nd story windows at four inches so toddlers don’t open them and fall out.  Putting a dowel in your 1st floor windows will allow you to get some airflow through the house without providing an easy way for burglars to get in while you are away.  Try to secure them so that when the window is closed, they don’t fall out of the way and allow the window to be opened from there.

Crime Blotter – Winter 2012

By Ofc Peter Helzer

Let me start off by saying Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Mele Kalikimaka, Feliz Navidad, and anything else I might have missed!   I apologize for not having made it to a meeting in several months.  We have been quite busy with Occupy Portland and several related events, and have been unable to make it to the bulk of the neighborhood meetings. .

Crime Blotter – Fall 2011

By Ofc Peter Helzer NRT  & Angela Wagnon ONI

It seems we got the good weather just as school is starting again.  I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to look out for kids on their way to/from school, and to drive safely in neighborhoods and school zones.  With everyone’s schedule filling up again with back to school activities and running around to events, remember not to leave valuables in your cars.

Crime Blotter – Summer 2011

By Ofc Peter Helzer NRT  & Angela Wagnon ONI

Hello!  The weather has finally begun to swing in the right direction, and school is letting out for the summer.  It’s time to remember our basic prevention techniques.  Check your outdoor lighting and watch out for your neighbors.  Just as a reminder, please keep your valuables out of your cars or out of sight and watch out for roving bands of teenagers out tagging.  Also, as we start leaving windows open for ventilation, remember to block them in some way, so they only open a little bit to keep the burglars out.

Crime Blotter – Spring 2011

By Ofc Peter Helzer NRT  & Angela Wagnon ONI

Greetings, everyone!  Now that we have sprung forward and the days are getting longer, we can look forward to better weather.  Spring break for the local school districts is getting started as well, which combines to give us an increased likelihood for more nuisance issues.  Please keep your valuables out of your cars or out of sight and watch out for roving bands of teenagers out tagging.  Also, as the weather begins to change and we start leaving windows open for ventilation, remember to block them in some way, so they only open a little bit and keep the burglars out.

Crime Blotter – Winter 2011

Hello, all.  Happy Holidays!  Of course, we know that means an increase in car prowls.  That was the big issue in Eliot over the past quarter, and I’m sure it will jump as we work our way up to Christmas.  Over half of the reported crimes in Eliot since September were car prowls.  A few tips to remember as we enter the holiday season:  1.  Never leave anything in your car that you would like to have be there when you get back.  2.  If you have to leave something in the car, leave it in the trunk and leave no clues there might be something worth breaking in for (iPod cord, GPS mount, etc.).  Remember, thieves are opportunistic.  If your car is locked and there is nothing interesting inside, they will go on to the next one.

The Crime Blotter – Fall 2010

By Ofc Peter Helzer NRT  & Angela Wagnon ONI

Hello, Eliot!  This is the first installation of what will hopefully become a regular feature of the Eliot News.  I was the Eliot Neighborhood Liaison Officer for a number of years before I was deployed with my National Guard unit to Iraq.  I am back, and have recently started with the Neighborhood Response Team.  I have taken over in this position for OFC Amanda McMillan who has moved on to a new assignment.  I look forward to working with everyone again.

Proposed Broadway Name Change

The City of Portland is currently evaluating options for renaming a street after civil rights leader Cesar Chavez. After a failed attempt in 2007 to rename North Interstate after the Latino labor and civil rights leader, the Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard Committee has initiated the street renaming process.  This time Broadway, Grand and 39th “streets” are potential candidates.
