The New Season Market on the corner of Williams and Fremont is getting closer to opening – expected in September. As part of preparing for opening day, New Seasons Market is hosting a job fair, primarily for the new store, but possibly for others as well, on Friday June 28th.

According to the EPA, 10 percent of homes in the U.S. have leaks that waste 90 or more gallons of water day. Toilets are one of the most common culprits – and also one of the easiest to detect and fix. Oftentimes, the most common problem is a worn flapper valve that needs to be replaced. This is a simple and inexpensive fix.

The Eliot Neighborhood Concert Committee has been hard at work gathering sponsors and creating a fantastic lineup of music for our annual Dawson Park Concert Series and movie night. We are in need of some help however. A couple of our larger sponsors from past years are unable to give this year, so we are still in need of donations and sponsorship.
Eliot’s reputation as a high crime area, along with NE Portland generally, is undeserved. Crime statistics are skewed by criminal activity directed at visitors from out of the area to the Rose Quarter and Lloyd Center, primarily car prowls and thefts, but thefts from stores and offices as well. As the bank robber Willy Horton said, “You go where the money is.”

Hello, all. It looks like the nicer weather is joining us earlier than it did the last couple years. That’s great for all our outdoor activities, but brings a few perils as well. The news is good about warning everyone to block 2nd story windows at four inches so toddlers don’t open them and fall out. Putting a dowel in your 1st floor windows will allow you to get some airflow through the house without providing an easy way for burglars to get in while you are away. Try to secure them so that when the window is closed, they don’t fall out of the way and allow the window to be opened from there.

Hello, all. Happy Holidays! Of course, we know that means an increase in car prowls. That was the big issue in Eliot over the past quarter, and I’m sure it will jump as we work our way up to Christmas. Over half of the reported crimes in Eliot since September were car prowls. A few tips to remember as we enter the holiday season: 1. Never leave anything in your car that you would like to have be there when you get back. 2. If you have to leave something in the car, leave it in the trunk and leave no clues there might be something worth breaking in for (iPod cord, GPS mount, etc.). Remember, thieves are opportunistic. If your car is locked and there is nothing interesting inside, they will go on to the next one.

Hello, Eliot! This is the first installation of what will hopefully become a regular feature of the Eliot News. I was the Eliot Neighborhood Liaison Officer for a number of years before I was deployed with my National Guard unit to Iraq. I am back, and have recently started with the Neighborhood Response Team. I have taken over in this position for OFC Amanda McMillan who has moved on to a new assignment. I look forward to working with everyone again.
The City of Portland is currently evaluating options for renaming a street after civil rights leader Cesar Chavez. After a failed attempt in 2007 to rename North Interstate after the Latino labor and civil rights leader, the Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard Committee has initiated the street renaming process. This time Broadway, Grand and 39th “streets” are potential candidates.
Today at a press conference held at the Hilton in downtown Portland, Major League Soccer officials announced they were awarding Portland a MLS team. This announcement came a little over a week after city council voted 3 – 2 to approve soccer.
