Firefighters Raise Money for Displaced Residents

Did you know that the Portland Firefighter’s Association is organizing a fundraiser for neighbors affected by the August 8 five-alarm fire on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard? The fire reduced to rubble a 46-unit apartment building that was under construction, rendering uninhabitable some of the adjacent residential buildings in the process. Several of the tenants displaced by the fire do not have the financial means to rent a second apartment; some have found themselves with nowhere to sleep but the couches of friends.

Five Alarm Rib Fundraiser

Portland chefs and firefighters will cook up a tasty rib dinner for you and your family on September 18, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at EaT Oyster Bar and Restaurant. For just $18 you’ll receive a firefighter’s plate of ribs and sides that will definitely fill you up. A healthy portion of each dinner sold will go towards folks directly impacted the by the five alarm fire in Northeast Portland last month.

Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel encourages kids to be active, play safe and stay healthy throughout the year. This summer, Randall Children’s Hospital is hosting its second annual free, fun and interactive Healthy Kids’ Street Fair on Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on North Gantenbein Avenue, in front of Randall Children’s Hospital on the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center campus.

Street Painting a Huge Success!

On the June 1st, dozens of neighbors gathered at NE Rodney and NE Tillamook to create Eliot’s first intersection painting. The twelve-hour effort, running from six o’clock in the morning to six o’clock in the afternoon, was the culmination of months of designing, signature gathering, and other planning efforts. This month, we finally put paint to pavement, transferring our vibrant graphic to the street. We hope that it brightens the path for pedestrians and bicyclists throughout the year!

Summer is almost upon us and that means another great season of entertainment at Dawson Park! This year, we raised enough money to host 4 concerts and one movie night. These events are free and a great way to spend an evening out in the neighborhood. Concerts start at 6:30pm.  The movie night starts with free entertainment and popcorn at 6:30 followed by the movie showtime at dusk. Our fantastic lineup is as follows:

This year, Eliot Neighbors are participating in Portland’s “Village Building Convergence”. Our project is an intersection painting at the corner of NE Rodney Avenue & NE Tillamook Street. Everyone is invited to join us and pitch in!

IHI Community Party

Innovative Housing, Inc. (IHI) is throwing a party to celebrate the start of its newest housing development in the Eliot Neighborhood! On Saturday, July 21, 2012, IHI will take over the vacant lot on NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between NE Cook and Fargo Streets (soon to become 50 units of new affordable housing) and fill it with friends, neighbors, musicians, food vendors, and tons of fun construction activities for kids.

Music and community celebration is what the Second Annual Boise-Eliot Music Festival is all about.  May 11th and 12th Port City will host the Second Annual Boise-Eliot Music Festival in North Portland.  This community-building event is a fundraiser for Port City’s innovative employment and skills building programs, which empower adults with developmental disabilities and engage Boise and Eliot neighbors and Portland metro residents.
