A Bikeway on Rodney?

Last night Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) held an open house for the “Rodney Bikeway Project” at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church community room. In summary, PBOT wants to make Rodney, from Broadway up to Killingsworth a “Bikeway”. The idea is to give bikers a calm and safe route up and down Rodney. It was a well-attended event.

Looking at the designs, there are three problems to be concerned about.

Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider

Rev Nats Taproom
Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider Taproom

You may recall last September seeing promotional materials for a block party in the southern part of the neighborhood. That same weekend Portland had that unseasonal cold rainy and windy storm. The block party was supposed to be Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider welcome to the neighborhood. Unfortunately it did not happen, but Rev Nat’s is still here.

The cidery and public taproom is located in the newly refurbished “Trade Bindery” building. The bulk of their space is the cidery where apples are turned into bubbly beverages. However, they reserved a small portion for the “public taproom” where you can go and taste a flight of cider, get a pint, or buy a bottle to take with you.

Now It’s Bunk

Bunk Sign

Bunk Bar is the latest rendition from the Bunk family to occupy the space under the Wonder Ballroom. About a year ago a new restaurant named Trigger – billed as “a Bunk Joint” opened up. Eventually they switched to counter ordering and no longer had wait staff. That pretty much marked the end of Trigger. Now, still a part of the family, the space has become another Bunk Bar.

Observing the MLK-Monroe Fire

MLK and Monroe Fire
KGW SkyCam view of the fire at MLK and Monroe

As the fire broke out on Monroe and MLK early Thursday morning much of the neighborhood became aware.  It may have been the heat, the flames, the sirens, the smoke, or a knock on the door.  Very few didn’t know about it.

This is my experience that morning.  It is nothing like those who lost their homes, but I thought I would share anyway.

The 5 story apartment complex on the corner of Monroe and MLK was vacant and still under construction when fire broke out Thursday August 8th around 4:15 AM.  The 5 Alarm fire was considered one of the biggest in the city in recent history.  Fire trucks lined a closed MLK Blvd. for several blocks as 120 firefighters doused the blaze.
