A Letter from the Eliot News editor
Spring has sprung and summer’s coming! It seems hard to believe that summer is on its way soon. Your kids may need some activities to keep them busy so look for the listings of the fun activities at Matt Dishman Community Center this summer as well as the art classes available for all ages at the Irvington Ceramics Club.
“Know your board” is a series of articles to help you get to know the members of your Eliot Neighborhood Association Board. Eliot has a very diverse board. It consists of men and women who care about our neighborhood. We want to share a little bit about your board members.
Sue Stringer is fairly new to Eliot. She has lived in the neighborhood for the last 3 years but has lived in Portland on and off for 17 years. She is also new to the board joining in January as the Eliot News Editor. She joined the board because she wanted to get more connected with the neighborhood and meet new neighbors.

What do you need from you Neighborhood Association the most? Social engagement, political representation for change or improved identity and safety? What are you doing to take action? What most excites you about this group/project?
There are quite a few projects going up right now in and around Eliot. North Eliot is getting most of the action. The two proposed large six-plus story tower developments at NE Fremont and Williams as well as the project at NE 7th and Russell have driven the most uproar. However, there are a number of other developments being proposed or already under construction.
It’s time for the annual Eliot Spring Clean-Up! On Sunday, May 17th from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm clean out your closets, unclutter your garage, organize your book shelves and recycle your outdated and broken electronics. Also bring us your used furniture, clothes, household items and old bicycles. This is the one Eliot Neighborhood Association fundraiser of the year so give generously.

Save the date for the upcoming intersection repaint block party for the Eliot Community Crossing, intersection of NE Tillamook and Rodney Ave. as a part of the city wide City Repair’s Village Building Convergence.
Can you believe that we are four weeks away from our 3rd annual block paint party? Time sure is flying by! Looking forward to seeing the many familiar and new faces of Eliot neighborhood.
On April 7th a few neighbors got together to discuss ways we could help make Eliot a more attractive place. Some great ideas were bandied about, and we’d love additional input as we think of ways to get as many neighbors involved with keeping our neighborhood clean. Our second meeting is scheduled for May 6th at 7:30 at 2308 NE Rodney Ave.
Regardless if crime is up or down on your individual street or in your neighborhood, starting and participating in an active Neighborhood Watch is always a good idea. The City of Portland’s Crime Prevention program is hoping to start new Watch groups and rekindle older ones in the Eliot Neighborhood area.
It’s wonderful to learn about the history of our Eliot neighborhood. Here are ways you can find out more about Eliot, its founders, its architecture and some of its elders.
